This project is funded by the state capital of Kiel and implemented together with the Kiel Environmental Department, the Schulze-Hamann cooking workshop and our Tanzanian partner “Tanzanian Bees and Trees Africa”. The “International Garden Kiel”, the “Fairtrade City of Kiel” steering group and the Mwereni Primary School from Moshi Municipal are also involved.

Project objective: By the end of 2025, a diverse school garden will have been established at Mnini Secondary School in Moshi District, Tanzania, which will include the cultivation of amaranth as the main crop.

Amaranth has been cultivated in Tanzania for a long time. However, only the leaves of the plant are usually used and processed like spinach. It is largely unknown that the seeds can also play an important role in a healthy diet. However, we also expect a high learning effect on the German side through the use of amaranth leaves, which is hardly known here.

In our project, we will teach the teachers and pupils of Mnini Secondary School about harvesting, processing and possible uses.

We are very much looking forward to this cultural and culinary exchange with our Tanzanian friends. In the next few weeks, we will start with the infrastructural measures so that everything is ready for successful vegetable cultivation in the coming rainy season. We will keep you up to date.
