The honey is of course produced by the bees. But where do the bee hives actually stand or hang?
Currently, there are 21 hives that we take care of in the Himo Tree Nursery
However, through previous projects with other groups in Moshi District, where we provided bee hives and talked about marketing and sales strategies, our scope has now expanded. We currently support the women's group Mapendo in Shimbwe Juu, the SIA Primary as well as the SIA Secondary School in Shimbwe, Permaculture Foundation Tanzania as well as the group Maendeleo Endelevu, Himo.
Himo Tree Nursery
The Tree nursery is a joint project of the state capital Kiel, Germany, and the Moshi District, Tanzania. On the 4.5 ha site, mainly native young trees are grown for the district. A fish pond is also managed to generate income. Beekeeping was added at the beginning of 2022. The nursery is to be developed into an environmental education center in the medium term.
Tanzanian Bees & Trees supports this project financially and professionally.
Mapendo
This is a women's group whose idea is to spread love in the community and support each other to improve community development. In this group, mostly widowed women living with HIV have joined together to carry out a sustainable project of planting mushrooms to generate income for their livelihood. Furthermore, Mapendo supports needy school children in the surrounding schools. Thus, school uniforms, pencils, notebooks and other items are financed.
In the summer of 2022, Tanzanian Bees & Trees provided the women's group with 10 bee hives and a beecage, as well as a workshop on beekeeping. The expected profits from honey sales will be used according to Mapendo's ideology.
SIA Primary und SIA Secondary School
In these two adjacent government schools in Uru Shimbwe, we imparted knowledge about bees and beekeeping in theory and practice as part of an environmental education project in September 2022. During this training week, 5 bee boxes were hung up together with the students. The expected proceeds from the sale of honey will be used to support the school kitchen.
Permaculture Foundation Tanzania
Victor Kinyaiya
Founding member Victor Kinyaiya manages the land in the interest of nature conservation, sustainable development and securing the livelihood of the local population. A particular focus is on raising and planting the Oysternuts. The protein-rich seeds of the pumpkin can be eaten raw, roasted, pickled, used in soups or made into sweets. The oil-rich seeds are a traditional food ingredient for nursing mothers in East Africa. As a climbing plant, the Oysternut needs old trees to grow on, which it can climb up. Thus, the cultivation of this plant counteracts the deforestation of old trees.
Tanzanian Bees & Trees has supported this project with marketing and sales training in the fall of 2022, as well as providing five bee hives.
Maendeleo Endelevu
This group consists of eight people with various disabilities which make it considerably more difficult for them to earn the living expenses. There is no governmental support for people with disabilities in Tanzania. They rely on family support and appropriate groups. With small projects such as poultry farming or beekeeping, they support each other to improve their financial situation.
Tanzanian Bees & Trees has supported Maendeleo Endelevu with a training for marketing and sales in the fall of 2022, as well as providing start-up funding for the construction of a maize storage facility.
